| Ten things you can do to help control health care costs |
1) Take care of yourself
In the U.S., we spend in excess of $1.8 trillion a year on health care. Fully 75 percent of that total is accounted for by chronic diseases. Many of these diseases are largely preventable. So it is important to eat healthy, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep each night. You'll feel better, reduce your stress, and improve your overall health and well-being.
2) Be an educated patient
Individuals who take time to educate themselves about their ailment get more out of their time with their medical providers. The Trust provides an array of services both to arm you with information and to help you if you have one of several chronic conditions.
3) Know your doctor and pharmacist
Establish a good relationship with your health care providers. It’s important that you find ones that you trust to help you make sound medical decisions and find your way through an increasingly complex health care system.
4) Use the emergency room for emergencies only
Don't hesitate to use an ER in an emergency, but if you go there when it’s not, you often face a long wait and added costs. A typical ER visit costs at least five times more than an office visit.
5) Review your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
Sometimes the simple things make a big difference. Reading your EOB to make sure that you were billed for services that you received can help catch errors and save your plan money.
6) Use generics when appropriate
When you are being prescribed medication, ask your physician if there is a generic drug available that is suitable for you. You’ll have a lower copayment, and your health plan will save money.
7) Use your self-care book
When you or a family member is feeling sick, your self-care book from the Trust will give you information on your symptoms or condition and help you determine what steps you should take.
8) Take the WEA Trust’s Health Assessment
The Trust’s annual Health Assessment gives you the opportunity to learn about your health risks and participate in programs that help maintain or improve your health.
9) Practice prevention
Acquaint yourself with the guidelines and recommendations for health screenings. Take advantage of these opportunities and stay healthy.
10) Participate in your district's wellness programs.
The Trust works with school districts across the state to help establish worksite health and wellness programs to improve the well-being of members. Do your part and participate.
