With spring break and summer approaching, many Wisconsinites are busy making last minute arrangements for a week on the beach or planning a memorable summer vacation for the family.
If you have travel plans and intend to move about the country or world in a rented vehicle, you should review your insurance coverage to make sure that you have adequate protection while behind the wheel.
Purchasing the rental company insurance: Is it needed?
When you rent a car, the rental company typically offers its own auto insurance coverage. However, you may not need to buy this additional car insurance if you have insurance coverage for vehicles you own. You may also have additional auto insurance coverage through your credit card. Check your credit card information and your own auto insurance policy for specific details.
Generally, when you rent a car, the liability coverage limits, the comprehensive and collision coverage, and corresponding deductibles you have in your own auto insurance policy remain in effect. So, if you damage a rental car, your insurance company will likely pay for the actual damage.
However, some rental companies may attempt to charge for loss of use and administrative fees associated with handling the claim, which are not covered by the typical auto policy. When the insurance company refuses to pay this part of the claim, the rental company may attempt to recover the amount directly from you. In this instance, the purchase of the rental companies insurance would protect you from being pursued or harassed for payment.
Traveling outside the U.S.
If you are planning to rent a car outside the United States, you may not be covered at all by your insurance. Most policies provide coverage while driving in Canada, but not Mexico or other foreign countries. Check your policy or call your provider for coverage details on foreign rentals.
Whether you plan to travel far or near, protect yourself and your travel experience from unpleasant surprises by doing your homework. Understand the extent of coverage by your own auto insurance policy, credit card, and the car insurance the rental company offers. Purchase additional insurance if there is a gap in coverage that puts you at risk.
