| The Trust now covers omeprazole OTC |
Good news. The WEA Trust now covers omeprazole OTC (over-the-counter) for members with our drug coverage.
Treat ulcers, heartburn
Omeprazole OTC is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). This class of drugs is used to treat frequent heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and ulcers.
Omeprazole OTC is available at the same strength as prescription only omeprazole (generic Prilosec), but is much less costly. Other medications in the PPI class include Aciphex, Nexium, prescription only omeprazole, pantoprazole (generic Protonix), Prevacid, and Prilosec OTC.
These PPIs are roughly equal in effectiveness or safety, according to Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs. However, there are significant cost differences, ranging from $19 per month to nearly $200.
Save money
Switching to omeprazole OTC or Prilosec OTC can save money for members and their health plans. For most people, these OTC options are as effective as the more expensive prescription alternatives. Additionally, Trust members can get a 90-day supply from their local pharmacy for just one copayment.
What you need to do
- Contact your physician to discuss this switch. Your pharmacist can also help by contacting your physician on your behalf.
- Ask your physician to write a prescription for a 90-day supply of omeprazole OTC. Be sure the prescription specifies omeprazole OTC, not omeprazole.
- You must obtain omeprazole OTC through a prescription in order for your pharmacist to bill the Trust. This offer is only available through a retail pharmacy.
If you have questions, please contact the Trust Customer Service Department at (800) 279-4000.
