OTC drug coverage

The Trust covers five over-the-counter (OTC) drugs: loratadine (generic Claritin) for allergies, Alaway and Zaditor for itchy eyes, and omeprazole OTC and Prilosec OTC for heartburn or upset stomachs. The Trust does not pay for any other drugs available over-the- counter.
Why it makes sense to cover these drugs
Evidence shows that for the vast majority of our members, loratadine, Alaway, Zaditor, omeprazole OTC, and Prilosec OTC work just as well as the more costly brand-name prescription-only drugs. Therefore, covering these OTC drugs makes financial sense as it ultimately saves both you and your health plan money.
As Tier 1 drugs, these five drugs require only modest copayments. In fact, you can receive a 90-day supply of these drugs for only one copayment at retail pharmacies.
How to receive coverage
Talk with your health care provider about whether loratadine, Alaway, Zaditor, omeprazole OTC, or Prilosec OTC is appropriate for you.
To receive reimbursement for these drugs, you will need a doctor's prescription. Take your prescription to your pharmacist and let him or her know that the drug is covered by your health plan. The pharmacist will dispense the medication and collect the appropriate copayment from you.
If you have questions about your prescription drug coverage, call the Trust at (800) 279-4000 and ask to speak with a customer service representative. |
