Tablet splitting
Tablet splitting can save money for you, your health plan

The Trust's tablet-splitting program is a voluntary way for you to save money on certain prescription copayments and will also save money for your health plan. Not all medications are suited for tablet splitting, and it may not work for all patients, so discuss it first with your doctor. Medical opinion generally considers the medications in the table below appropriate for tablet splitting; you may ask your doctor if others are also suitable.

If you would like to participate in this program, follow these steps:
  1. Talk to your doctor. If your doctor agrees that tablet splitting is safe for you, order your tablet splitter. Allow two to three weeks for delivery.
  2. Note: Tablet splitters are available to WEA Trust members only.
  3. Have your doctor write a new prescription for 30 tablets at double the dose of your existing one, with instructions to take a half tablet daily. For example, if you currently take 20 milligrams daily of a cholesterol medication, your doctor will need to write the dosage for a 40-milligram tablet. You will be responsible for one copayment for the 30 tablets, which by splitting will give you a 60-day supply.
  4. Don't split the whole prescription at once. To ensure the most accurate dosage, it’s safest to split one tablet at a time and take the second half on consecutive days.
  5. If your doctor or pharmacist has questions, call (800) 279-4000 to speak with a customer service representative.

The voluntary program is available only for retail pharmacy purchases (mail-order prescriptions are excluded).

What not to split: Medication in capsule form, tablets with certain special coatings, drugs with precise dosing requirements, and controlled-release drugs should not be split. Ask your pharmacist to be certain your medication doesn't fall into these categories. Additionally, tablet splitting is not recommended if you have poor vision, poor manual dexterity, or if you find that tablet splitting is confusing.
