Eligibility for benefits

Eligibility for benefits is based on chronic illness, which means that you must have either a functional incapacity or a severe cognitive impairment. Severe cognitive impairment is comparable to Alzheimer's disease and similar forms of irreversible dementia. Functional incapacity means the inability to perform three or more of the six basic activities of daily living (ADLs) without substantial assistance from another person. The basic ADLs are:
- Bathing
- Continence
- Dressing
- Eating
- Toileting
- Transferring
